I really get nervous every time someone asks me: But what do you do? Because I never really know what to say… I would love to have a “normal” profession and say: I am a lawyer, an engineer, a doctor… It would be so much easier! But the truth is that I like to do a lot of different things at the same time and, for me, it is hard to pick only one.
But, at the end of the day, what do you actually do?
My first degree was in Communication but I never really worked as a journalist! Well, actually, my travels and internships gave me the opportunity to write about different places and multiple articles of mine were featured in national and international magazines (More about my articles HERE). Does this count?
I also worked as content manager and launched several websites/ e-shops in Portugal, France, Brazil and Spain. If you ask me if I can create a website from the beginning to the end, I can surely do that BUT if you ask me about my understanding in PHP, JAVA and related languages… Then, I will have to admit all of that is like Mandarin…
I worked as a waitress in bars, restaurants and nightclubs when I was studying in Paris and when I moved to Sydney, until I found something that I liked more, I worked as a hostess at the Casino. Am I a hospitality professional? Not! But smiling and carrying 3 dishes at the same time can be very useful at home when there are a lot of guests.
I traveled so much that I became a storyteller (mine and those of my friends and strangers… HERE some stories). I also learned how to take pictures and make videos! Although I still have a long way to go, I receive messages, every now and then, saying that my photos and articles are an inspiration. So if you still do not follow me on Instagram, I believe that’s a strong reason to start doing it. Now you ask me: Am I a professional of words or pictures? NO! But, at my scale, I have already created a little impact.
I did research on financial markets in Australia but if you ask me to make a complicated calculation, believe me, I can not do it. However, when I was living in kangaroo’s land, I was pretty serious on every commerce and finance report I worked.
Ahhh and among all of that, I also taught Portuguese and Statistics in Lisbon, Paris and Sydney … Am I a Teacher? I am not but I have learned a lot with my students.
But who am I? or what do I do? Well, I guess I still do not know. Maybe it’s a mix of everything and nothing. It may be a mixture of many experiences, many curiosities, many attempts. I believe you really have to keep trying and discovering to be able to reach what you really love.
Who agrees? And who has felt or is feeling this way, right now? Share your thoughts with me, pleaseeeee…
Beijinho,
Daniela
